Four Students, Countless Hours, One Extraordinary Achievement

Picture Prince Kalulu, late in the evening, flashlight in hand, reviewing word lists long after his siblings have gone to bed. Imagine Settie Chizimba practicing pronunciation with her grandmother, turning preparation into precious family time. See Naomi Major and Austin Galimoto, pushing each other to excellence, celebrating small victories along the way.

These four remarkable learners have earned their place in the Regional Finals of the Malawi National Spelling Bee, but their journey represents something deeper than competition. It’s a story of discipline meeting opportunity, of natural curiosity nurtured by encouragement, and of communities rallying behind young people who dare to reach higher.

Their teachers speak with pride about the transformation they’ve witnessed—not just in spelling ability, but in confidence, poise, and the growing realization that academic excellence is within reach. Their classmates have become their cheerleaders, proof that when one student rises, they lift the entire learning community with them.

“Every word I spell correctly,” Prince shared with a quiet confidence, “reminds me that I can master difficult things. If I can do this, what else can I achieve?”

That question hangs beautifully in the air as we prepare to cheer for Prince, Settie, Naomi, and Austin in the regional finals. Their success is already complete—not because of what they’ll spell on stage, but because they’ve discovered the learning spirit that will carry them through every challenge they’ll ever face.
