The Circle at Dzenza: Where Strength Begins with a Conversation

10 October 2025

The morning sun filtered through the windows of Dzenza Secondary School as students gathered in a circle, some fidgeting nervously, others exchanging curious glances. It was World Mental Health Day, and for many of these young people, this would be the first time they’d been invited to speak openly about something often left unspoken: how they truly feel.

“It’s okay not to be okay,” one student offered tentatively, breaking the initial silence. The words hung in the air for a moment before others began nodding, and soon the circle came alive with stories, questions, and the kind of honest reflection that only happens when young people feel truly safe.

This is the heart of MATCH Foundation’s Achinyamata Ojaka initiative—creating spaces where 3,000 students across Malawi can experience something revolutionary: being seen, heard, and valued exactly as they are. Through games that sparked laughter, conversations that invited vulnerability, and moments of shared understanding, the students at Dzenza reminded us of a powerful truth: strength doesn’t come from hiding our struggles; it comes from the courage to share them.

As one young woman shared during a closing reflection, “Today I learned that when I talk about how I feel, I’m not weak. I’m brave.” It’s in these moments that we glimpse the future we’re building together—one where mental health isn’t whispered about in corners but celebrated as the foundation of all learning, growth, and possibility.
