From Regional Stage to National Spotlight
The room fell silent as the next word was announced.
“Imbroglio.”
Across the stage, a young learner took a deep breath. Around them sat competitors from schools across the region, all listening intently. Months of preparation through the after-school program had led to this moment. Every letter mattered. Every second counted.
For four learners sponsored by MATCH Foundation, this was more than just a spelling competition, it was an opportunity to prove how far determination, hard work, and access to educational support can take a child.
At the Regional Spelling Bee Competition, learners faced an impressive list of challenging words, including Impetuous, Imbroglio, Circumlocution, and Reprimand. Each round tested not only vocabulary and spelling ability but also confidence, focus, and composure under pressure.
As the competition progressed, excitement began to build. One by one, MATCH learners continued advancing through the rounds. Then came the moment that would make history for the Foundation.
Four learners had qualified for the National Finals.
Naomi Major (Form 3), Settie Chizimba (Form 2), Austin Galimoto (Form 2), and Prince Kalulu (Standard 5) had secured their places among Malawi’s top young spellers.
For MATCH Foundation, this achievement marked a significant milestone. Since its establishment, the Foundation has worked to strengthen educational opportunities for children and young people. Reaching the National Finals of the Spelling Bee for the very first time was a powerful reflection of that investment in literacy, confidence-building, and academic excellence.
On 30 May, the four learners travelled to the magnificent Bingu International Convention Center (BICC) at the helm of the capital city, Lilongwe to compete on the national stage alongside some of the brightest young minds from across the country. The atmosphere was electric. Competitors, families, teachers, and supporters gathered to witness the culmination of months of preparation and dedication.
Although our learners did not ultimately claim the national title, they left the stage with something equally valuable: experience, confidence, and the knowledge that they belonged among the country’s best.
Their journey serves as a reminder that success is not measured only by trophies and rankings. Sometimes, success is found in the courage to step onto a bigger stage, to challenge yourself beyond the classroom, and to discover what is possible.
