Young Champions Rise at Tadala abc Primary School

The excitement was palpable at Tadala abc Primary School as young footballers took to the pitch for the Football Bonanza under MATCH Foundation’s Play and Stay Sports Program. With every pass, tackle and goal, the children demonstrated that talent exists in rural communities, too, and that with the right support and opportunities, young people can go beyond their limits.

The bonanza marked a special moment following a sports camp at the school, led by UK volunteers Josh Wilsdon and Louis Bougourd. Through their engagement with the children, the camp provided an opportunity for young players to develop their sporting abilities, learn from others and experience the power of sport in bringing people together. It also reinforced MATCH Foundation’s commitment to nurturing sporting excellence among children and young people, particularly those from rural communities who often have limited access to structured sports development opportunities.

A total of 60 participants competed across three categories: Under-12 Boys, Under-15 Boys and Under-15 Girls. After a series of exciting matches, champions were crowned, celebrating not only victories on the pitch but also the dedication, teamwork and determination that every young player brought to the competition. For these young athletes, the experience was another step towards discovering their potential and building the confidence to pursue their dreams.

But the impact of the Football Bonanza goes beyond the trophies and final scores. At MATCH Foundation, sport is a powerful tool for creating opportunities, strengthening relationships and helping children and young people develop essential life skills. Through the Play and Stay Sports Program, the Foundation continues to use sport as a pathway for learning, personal growth and community development, ensuring that children in rural areas are not left behind when it comes to accessing opportunities to thrive.

Importantly, the participation of girls in the bonanza highlighted the need to keep creating safe, inclusive and supportive sporting spaces where girls can compete, lead and excel alongside their peers. By encouraging more girls to take part in sport, MATCH Foundation hopes to challenge barriers to participation and ensure that every child, regardless of gender, has the opportunity to discover their abilities and shine.

Looking ahead, MATCH Foundation hopes to make the Football Bonanza a quarterly event, creating regular opportunities for young athletes to compete, improve their skills and celebrate their achievements. Because when children are given the space to play, learn and grow, the possibilities extend far beyond the football pitch. At Tadala abc Primary School, the journey is about more than raising champions in football; it is about nurturing confident, talented and empowered young people who can shape a brighter future for their communities.
